WeaveGrid Partners with LUMA Energy to Support Grid Resilience in Puerto Rico
WeaveGrid today announced a partnership with LUMA Energy, Puerto Rico's electric utility provider, to support their EV Time of Use Rate Pilot Program.
Up to 500 Eligible LUMA residential electric vehicle drivers can place their vehicle or charger on a time-of-use rate while the rest of their house remains on a general service electric rate. EV drivers can save money by shifting charging to occur during the off-peak times.
This program will provide Puerto Rican EV drivers with a suite of benefits, including:
- ‍Cost savings: By participating in the program, EV drivers can take advantage of LUMA Energy's EV Time of Use rates, which offer lower electricity prices for EV charging during off-peak hours, without needing to install a separate utility meter.‍
- Grid stability: WeaveGrid's intelligent charging platform will help EV drivers optimize charging times to minimize strain on the electric grid, ensuring amore reliable and sustainable energy future for Puerto Rico.
“We are thrilled to partner with LUMA Energy to bring an EV Time of Use rate and data insights program to Puerto Rico,” said Dave Bend, VP of Business Development and Client Growth at WeaveGrid. “This pilot program will not only help the island’s EV drivers save money, but it will also play a critical role in supporting the growth of electric vehicles and a more resilient electric grid.”
“We’re excited to work with WeaveGrid to enable Time of Use pricing for EV charging as a means to further the energy transition on the island and empower our customers while doing so,” said Jeff Wahl, VP of Customer Programs at LUMA Energy. “We believe that this partnership with WeaveGrid will allow our EV driving customers to align their charging with grid needs while enhancing the resilience of our electric grid.”
The program is designed to collect data insights about customer charging patterns in Puerto Rico and bill EV drivers at a lower rate for charging that occurs during off-peak times. As an island grid system with significant and growing solar and storage assets, LUMA and WeaveGrid are working to ensure that those resources are used to their fullest capacity to deliver affordable and reliable power to the whole island. Utilizing WeaveGrid’s sophisticated platform and solutions, LUMA is also preparing for a future where EVs act as additional distributed storage devices to supplement the storage being deployed today, making EVs into assets for the grid.
